Jane McGehee, not to be confused with her mother “Jane Patterson McGehee,” was born in Tennessee in 1814. After traveling to Illinois with her parents, she married Hayden Hilton in Knox County, Illinois, on February 11, 1834. The two had a daughter named Sarah Jane Hilton, born in either 1834-35.
I believe Jane McGehee Hilton passed away about the time of her child’s birth because Sarah Jane was raised by her grandmother Jane Patterson McGehee and Hayden Hilton went on to marry again.
Sarah Jane Hilton went on to live in Lawrence County, Missouri, with her grandmother Jane and would later marry Cyrus Cepal Bryant, and the two would be involved in missions work in Oklahoma. They are purportedly buried in Speed Oklahoma, but I was told that their graves were covered by some sort of lake or body of water.
We do not know where Jane McGehee Hilton is buried, but for sentimental reasons, I hope it is near her father, James.
To the left is part of the marriage record for Hayden Hilton and Jane McGehee.
Originally, before we knew about Jane McGehee, it was believed that this was Jane Patterson McGehee remarrying after James's death. Later after learning about the daughter named Jane, it made much more sense.
